Animation Character Sketches

 

I played with a lot of ideas for these sketches, some of them were dead ends, but what I've decided to go with is a flying robot meeting a cat for the first time. I'm going to be working out the details and a real title while I'm storyboarding, but for now the working title is just "Catbot."

Concept: “A hopeful vision of the future”

For my design competition I here present, "Future of Many Suns," a vision of a far-off land in humanity's future. We see an alien sky filled with stars and planets as of yet (circa 2021) unmapped, and the foreground shows a Martian-ish landscape with giant fungi habitats being grown there. This was based on NASA's ongoing project to engineer fungal habitats for future colonization of Mars and the moon. An optimistic view of a planet's earliest human hosting.

I shared this with family and friends, but the people available at such short notice didn't know much about art or design, so they just said they liked it, and pointed out places where I could really polish it to a shine, places where the white locked background was showing through, and places that needed a little more texture, like the planets on the far right, which originally came out looking unnaturally smooth compared to the others. Honestly, I think that was probably the part I needed the most attention drawn, as I've been a little reckless with the final polishes in past assignments, and it's good to have someone hold your foot to the fire once in a while.

Some of this depicts the uplifting of our most intelligent species, the friendship between future sentients such as humans and octopi, some fungi habitats on the Moon and on Mars, something NASA is currently experimenting with. There are also some first contact representations, some more space prospects, some daydream projections imagined by someone suffering from the severely lacking public assistance in the modern day, a more metaphorical attempt at someone peeling away the wallpaper of a false world to see the real wall underneath, and a number of views of Earth from the moon and orbit, and Mars through the lens of augmented reality glasses.

CD Album Cover Final

For this album I used a lot of life and death imagery, like the eyed headstones and the little green plant on everything. Much like life is the face of our existence and death the behind, the front cover represents multiple lives, and the back cover represents multiple deaths (owing to the reincarnation theme mentioned in my last post on the subject). The cover shows bright green leaves growing off the blackened wood of the plants that make up the words "Past Life," connecting to roots that probe the ground, all to hearken to older and more natural things, and the word "progressive" is done up in more metallic grays and blues, all with a dim shine to conjure thoughts of metallurgy, florescent lighting, and the future beyond. 

The back shows a group of graves, each with an eye. The drawing lines are in white with the background in black to resemble a photo negative. The blue sphere made up of lines of bubbles represent many worlds, like in orbit around a star, or like a quantum particle, and the interlacing shape at the bottom suggests interlocking cycles of infinity. The logo and bar code are from capital records because my last school was across from their building so it was the first place my mind went.  The pages between feature images from the back.
