I’m Maggie, my name is Meghan D. Coates, and making art is both a passion and a compulsion for me, it drives me crazy to be away from drawing or writing materials for any length of time. I can’t live without creation, whether it’s writing novels, composing songs, or sketching out a character design, so with great ambition, I’m driven to expel all the overwhelming feelings, poisonous lies, and dangerous truths trapped in my head before I overflow or self-destruct--the fear, the rage, the despair, the hope, the love. I have so much love for the world, the universe, the human race, and its raw potential. All the things we could be, if only we put pointless cruelties and damaging apathies aside.
I’m centered in fine arts, and can probably be defined as an illustrator. Illustration is art with context, and that’s mostly what I make, whether for comics, book covers/inserts, character art, etc., though I often paint or draw contextless pieces, some abstract, some more concrete in subject. Throughout my art I often touch on subjects like sci-fi/fantasy, genetics, mental illness, and climate change, and I experiment a lot with style, color, texture, and medium. I’m always trying to improve and grow as an artist and as a person, and I want people to walk away from my art haunted by it, a fire set under their feet; I want to make people care about the world, and the people in it.
